한국은 5,000년의 장구하고 풍요로운 역사를 가지고 있습니다. 그러나 1910년부터 1945년까지 일본의 식민지로 많은 사람들이 일본 통치하에서 고난을 겪었고 일본은 한국문화의 모든 흔적을 말살하려고 했습니다.
일본의 점령기간 동안, 수 천명의 한국인이 죽거나 부상을 당하고 다른 한국인들은 강제노동을 수행하거나 일본을 위해 싸우기 위해 징병 당해야만 했습니다.
2차 대전 전이나 도중에 징병 및 징용된 한국인의 숫자가 1백만 명이 넘고, 약 200,000 명의 한국 여성들이 위안부로서 일본군에 종사하여야만 했습니다.
많은 한국인들이 일본 식민 지배에 맞서 싸운 무장 독립군으로 희생되었습니다.
1945년 8월 15일 일본의 항복으로 제2차 세계대전이 종식되어 한국이 독립하였고, 1948년 8월 15일 대한민국 정부가 수립되었습니다.
또한 한국은 일본의 한반도 식민 통치 35년 만인 제 2차 세계대전 종전과 함께 독도(일본인들은 다케시마라고 부름)의 통치권을 되찾았습니다.
생존한 많은 피해자들이 일본의 지도자들에게 전쟁 위안부와 독도를 비롯한 많은 문제에 대한 진실한 사과를 하기를 바라고 있음에도 불구하고 일본 정부는 진실을 인정하지 않은 채 심지어 희생자들을 모욕하고 역사를 왜곡시키고 있는 상태입니다.
