More than 20 participants, including current and former master’s and doctoral students, delivered 1,000 briquettes to energy-vulnerable households. For many residents, the briquettes remain a primary source of heat during winter months.

Guryong Village, tucked away in the affluent Gangnam district, emerged in the late 1980s as displaced families settled on unused land amid rapid urban development. Over decades, the settlement grew into what is often described as Seoul’s last large shantytown — a stark contrast to the high-rise apartments and glass towers nearby.

Though a large-scale redevelopment plan has now been approved, daily life in the village remains precarious. Aging infrastructure, steep alleys, and an elderly population have long raised concerns about safety and energy poverty, particularly during extreme weather.

“For students who study space, cities, and development, it’s important to confront the realities that exist beyond planning documents and investment maps,” said Professor Lee Jae-soon, who led the initiative. “We wanted to understand space not as an abstract concept, but as a lived environment.”

Professor Lee emphasized that urban value cannot be measured solely by land prices or architectural form. “A space becomes meaningful only when the lives within it are warm and dignified,” he said. “We hope this small act helps residents endure the winter, and reminds us of our responsibility as scholars.”

Participants described the experience as a lesson beyond the classroom. Carrying briquettes up steep slopes, they spoke with residents who have lived in the village for decades, many of whom expressed uncertainty about what redevelopment will bring.

Urban researchers note that Guryong Village reflects a broader challenge facing global cities: how to reconcile redevelopment with social continuity. While new housing may improve physical conditions, the transition period often leaves residents vulnerable.

By choosing Guryong Village as the site of its year-end gathering, the Hoseo University group sought to connect academic inquiry with civic engagement. The effort, organizers said, is part of a broader commitment to social contribution that extends beyond a single event.

As Seoul continues to remake itself, the quiet exchange of warmth in Guryong Village offered a different measure of progress — one defined not by skyline changes, but by human connection.

In a significant move that signals South Korea’s growing ambitions in the digital asset space, the Korea Digital Asset Forum (KoDiA) was launched Thursday at Seoul National University, bringing together key figures from across the financial technology landscape.

The inaugural seminar, themed “Building a Sustainable Future for Digital Assets Together,” drew a diverse crowd of industry experts, academics, legal professionals, and policymakers, all united by a common goal: positioning South Korea as a global leader in the rapidly evolving world of digital finance.

“We stand at a critical juncture where global financial structures are being fundamentally reshaped by digital innovation,” said Eun-seok Gu, chairman of KoDiA Forum and CEO of legal AI firm Seoul Robot, during his keynote address. “This forum aims to create a transparent ecosystem and establish institutional frameworks aligned with international standards to enhance our global competitiveness.”

The forum comes at a pivotal moment as digital currencies increasingly gain mainstream attention worldwide. South Korea, with its tech-savvy population and advanced digital infrastructure, has been both a hotbed for cryptocurrency trading and a cautious regulator trying to balance innovation with investor protection.

Representative Min-gyu Park emphasized the legislative perspective, pledging to “develop balanced regulations that both support innovation and ensure market stability.” His remarks reflect the delicate balancing act facing lawmakers globally as they grapple with regulating an industry that moves at breakneck speed.

The seminar featured substantive presentations on emerging trends, including an analysis by Jin-seok Go, co-founder of BlockESG, who detailed the global digital currency landscape. Go particularly focused on the recent launch of the “USD1″ stablecoin by the Trump administration, describing it as “a strategic move to extend dollar hegemony into the digital realm” rather than merely another cryptocurrency entry.

Of particular interest to international observers was Steve Young Kim’s presentation on Binance’s strategy for the Korean market. As a director at the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Kim provided data showing how recent U.S. tariff policies have affected digital asset markets differently than traditional investments, with crypto assets falling nearly 26% while gold rose over 10% following the “Liberation Day” tariff announcements.

“In this stagflationary environment, Bitcoin has demonstrated relative stability compared to altcoins, though it remains vulnerable to broader financial market turbulence,” Kim noted, before outlining Binance’s plans to adapt to Korea’s evolving regulatory framework.

The KoDiA Forum has articulated three core visions: developing South Korea’s domestic digital asset industry, strengthening global competitiveness, and realizing technological innovation with financial inclusion. Its practical focus will include policy recommendations, legal and regulatory analysis, and the development of integration models between digital and physical assets.

Professor Kyung-min Kim of Seoul National University’s Urban Planning Department concluded the event with a forward-looking assessment of how digital assets might transform not just finance but urban infrastructure, real estate, and public services.

“Digital assets will be catalysts for new value creation across multiple sectors,” Kim said. “Sustainable development requires not just technological innovation but institutional frameworks based on social consensus.”

As central banks worldwide, including the Bank of Korea with its “Digital Test Project Hangang,” explore central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and regulatory bodies develop frameworks for private stablecoins, the KoDiA Forum appears well-positioned to influence policy directions in what has become one of the world’s most dynamic cryptocurrency markets.

With plans for regular seminars, research publications, and international networking, South Korea’s newest think tank has set ambitious goals to help the nation navigate the complex intersection of technological innovation, financial stability, and global competitiveness in the digital asset space.

Titled “AI and ESG: The Future of Legal Collaboration”, the event was co-hosted by the ESG Social Innovation Center at Seoul National University and SeoulLawBot, a rising AI legal services company. The gathering took place at the university’s Graduate School of Environmental Studies and tackled urgent societal issues — such as rental fraud and legal inequality — through the lens of emerging technology.

“AI lawyers have the potential to significantly enhance access to justice, especially for working-class citizens who are often left behind by the traditional legal system,” said Professor Kim Kyung-min of SNU. He underscored the need for innovation in legal accessibility.

Professor Bae Ki-chul of Kyung Hee University echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that AI legal services could also serve the public interest by bridging critical service gaps.

From the industry perspective, Lee Young-tak, Executive Vice President at SK Telecom, stressed that the advancement of AI in the legal domain requires not only robust infrastructure but also a cultural shift in how the public perceives legal technology. “We must ensure society is ready to trust and embrace this innovation,” he said.

Ku Eun-seok, CEO of SeoulLawBot, framed the issue succinctly: “There are many lawyers in Korea, yet many people still struggle to get legal help. AI lawyers are not here to replace professionals but to complement them.” He pointed to the AI’s role in preliminary consultations, where it provides essential guidance before human lawyers step in.

Co-founder Koh Jin-seok added that the government must play an active role — not just in fostering AI legal startups, but also in adjusting regulations to accommodate and guide this emerging industry.

As South Korea explores AI’s role in the public sector, this seminar marks a pivotal step in redefining how law can serve society in the digital age. The question is no longer whether AI belongs in the courtroom — but how fast we can build a system where it can make a difference.

“글을 쓰다는 것은 사랑입니다”라는 슬로건 아래 열린 이번 행사는 139여명의 독립출판과 1인출판, 소규모 출판 창작자 즉 부커(북메이커)가 참여하고, 총 101개의 부스가 개설되어 다양한 장르의 도서를 소개하고 독자들과 소통하는 자리를 마련했다.

행사장은 오전 11시부터 오후 6시까지 꾸준히 방문객들로 북적였으며, 행사장 내 마련된 부스에서는 부커들이 자신이 추천하는 책에 대한 열정적인 소개와 함께 방문객들과 활발한 대화를 나누었다.

특히 이번 행사에는 유명 작가부터 일반 시민 부커 등 다양한 계층이 참여해 문학, 에세이, 역사, 과학, 예술 등 폭넓은 분야의 책을 소개했다. 부커 목록을 살펴보면 ‘사계절출판사’, ‘KOREAN BLUE’, ‘톰북스’, ‘케이툰’, ‘꿈공작소’ 등 출판사와 독립서점 관계자들도 참여해 행사의 전문성을 높였다.

정치권의 공방은 치열하다. 이 대표는 “국힘이 초고액자산가 상속세율 인하를 주장하며 개정을 막고 있다”며 “시가 60억 이상 초부자들 상속세를 왜 10%p나 깎아주자는 건가”라고 날을 세웠다. 반면 야당은 종부세 등 기존 부동산 정책에 대한 비판을 이어가며 맞불을 놓고 있다.

그렇다면 현장의 목소리는 어떨까? 마포갑 지역 여론조사 결과, 상속세 개편에 대한 반응은 개인의 처지에 따라 제각각이다. 80대이신 분은 “세금내는 것보다는 자식 물려주고 싶다”며 찬성하는 반면, 장남으로서 아버지 명의 아파트를 상속받게 될 50대 회사원은 “50% 세율도 높으므로 40% 정도로 내렸으면 좋겠다”고 말했다.

흥미로운 점은 상속세 개편을 넘어선 기대감이다. 60대 주부는 “증여세도 같이 바꿨으면 좋겠다”고 했고, 공인중개사들은 “종합부동산세도 같이 바꿔야 한다”고 입을 모았다. 이는 단순히 상속세 문제를 넘어 부동산 관련 세제 전반에 대한 국민적 요구가 크다는 방증이다.

정치적 지형에서도 이 문제는 중요하다. 민주당 지지자들은 “2022년 대선·지선 패배는 종부세 영향이 컸던 만큼 이번 상속세 정책은 중도층에 어필할 것”이라며 기대감을 표했다. 반면 국민의힘 지지자들은 “민주당은 지금까지 집값 올리고 종합부동산세 만들어 집 가진 서민들 괴롭혔다”며 불신을 드러냈다.

문제는 구체성이다. 많은 시민들이 “현재 발표된 안만으로는 세금을 계산해 보지 않아 잘 체감을 못하겠다”고 말했다. 공인중개사들도 “발표만 나온 상황이라 아직 구체적 문의는 없고 실제 바뀌어봐야 상담이 들어올 것”이라고 전망했다.

이에 대한 해결책으로 개편 전후 비교할 수 있는 웹자보나 개인이 직접 개별 조건을 입력해 개편 전후 상속 세금을 비교해 볼 수 있는 프로그램 개발이 제안됐다. 또한 공인중개사협회와 한국세무사회 등과의 간담회를 통해 현장의 목소리를 듣고, 경로당 방문 시 상속세 계산 등 어르신 대상 적극 홍보도 필요하다는 의견이 나왔다.

상속세 개편은 단순한 세율 조정이 아니다. ‘가족의 정이 서린 집’을 지키는 문제이자 중산층 확보라는 정치적 과제이기도 하다. 정치권은 국민이 체감할 수 있는 구체적인 정책으로 접근해야 할 것이다. 부동산은 가계자산의 대부분을 차지하는 한국 경제의 특성상, 상속세 개편은 증여세, 종부세 등 연관 세제와 함께 종합적으로 검토돼야 한다.

무엇보다 중요한 것은 ‘누구를 위한 정책인가’라는 근본적 질문이다. 진정으로 서민과 중산층을 위한 정책이라면, 국민이 이해하고 체감할 수 있도록 구체적이고 투명한 정보 제공이 우선되어야 할 것이다.

This conference is designed to diagnose the rapidly changing global virtual asset market and present strategic insights and future directions for the Korean blockchain industry.

The conference will proceed with two main agendas: ‘The Current Status and Future of the Korean Blockchain Industry’ and ‘The Current Status and Future of the Global Blockchain Industry.’ It is expected that in-depth discussions will take place on topics such as: reviewing domestic virtual asset regulatory policies and the current industry ecosystem; innovative use cases of blockchain technology and new business possibilities; analysis of blockchain strategies of major Asian countries; the background and impact of the surge in virtual assets and the strategic use of Bitcoin; and the implications of global industry trends for Korea.

In particular, prominent domestic and international experts will participate as speakers and panelists at this conference, leading to in-depth discussions.

Takeshi Chino, Representative of Binance Japan: Based on his traditional finance background, he will share expertise on financial regulations and present a vision for expanding the blockchain ecosystem gained through Binance’s experience entering the Japanese market.

Gabriella Kusz, Director of BlockFills: As an ESG expert, she will lead in-depth discussions on sustainability reporting, climate governance, and the convergence of blockchain and ESG.

Philip Gant, Director of APAC Policy & Partnerships, Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC): As an expert in East Asian institutions, he will introduce GBBC’s work with policymakers around the world to understand and advance the blockchain ecosystem.
